About Us

Our founder, Christopher Cotter, was born in 1891 in Cork Ireland, the youngest of 9 children. In 1910 he worked his passage as ships engineer on the steamer “Ionic”.

He founded C.F.Cotter & Co in 1919 and the business thrived for decades at the central city location of 158 High St in Christchurch.

The products that we sell have changed markedly since those early days, however the traditional values remain the same, and our philosophy of providing real service coupled with quality solutions for our customers remains the cornerstone of our success.

The current central city location at 287 Tuam st features a showroom and also a repair workshop facility where all service work is undertaken by our trained, qualified electrical service technicians.

Cotters specialise in the sales and service of quality domestic and commercial vacuum cleaners, including carpet shampoo machines, with expertise in commercial and industrial areas including the removal of hazardous materials, such as asbestos.

Cotters sold it’s first Nilfisk (Tellus) cleaner in 1963, and this brand have been at the core of operations ever since, for well over 50 years!

Design expertise and manufacturing quality set Nilfisk apart and many recognise it as the finest vacuum cleaner ever produced.

Many will recognise the “Tellus” name from previous decades – maybe your Mum, or even your Grandma had a Tellus back in the days before throwaway junk had not yet been invented! Now rebranded as Nilfisk, that same quality is still available to those who like the idea of “Buying once and Buying well”.

In our Showroom can be found vacuum cleaner bags and  filters for almost any brand of vacuum known to man, along with spare parts such as hoses sets, extension pipes and floor tools to fit just about any vacuum cleaner.

Also stocked are Electric Shavers from brands such as Braun and Phillips along with blades, foils, and cleaning products for shavers.
